  • 2 Market of Processed Fruits and Vegetables in Poland – Bożena Nosecka
    • Prior 2008 both production and consumption of fruit and vegetable products showed a regular upward tendency, whish strengthened after the accession to the EU. The tendency reflected also increasing processing capacity and growing imports of raw materials. The world economic crisis and a slowdown of Polish economy weakened internal demand for fruits and vegetables and caused a decline in export prices. Due to depreciation of Polish currency a decline in imports was observed. Despite the decline of the utilisation level of production capacity, and thus the declining production of many products, financial indicators of the branch in 2009 were better than in the previous year. An improvement in economic situation in European countries along with acceleration of economic growth in Poland will bring upward tendencies in Polish fruit and vegetable processing sector back on the track.

  • 8 Supporting Schedules for the Promotion of Agro-food Products – Mirosława Tereszczuk
    • Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union provides support for the information, advertising and promotional activity on the agro-food products market. In the framework of this mechanism it is possible to get partial funding for implementations of promotional and/or information programs. As part of those programs is increasing the knowledge of consumers about advantages of foodstuffs produced in European Community. Moreover, the aim of conducted action should be increasing demand for food by strengthening the product image, in particular with reference to the quality, nutritional value, food safety and production methods.

  • 16 Mycotoxins in Food – Changes in European Union Legislation – Jacek Postupolski, Krystyna Rybińska, Ewa Lendzion, Jolanta Kurpińska-Jaworska, Małgorzata Szczęsna, Kazimierz Karłowski
    • Development of international trade, as well as progress in research in mycotoxins contamination of food was a reason for revision of European Union mycotoxins legislation. For alignment with Codex Alimentarius FAO/WHO standards, changes of Commission Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 setting maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs was necessary. It is considered to set up maximum levels for new groups of foodstuffs such as oilseeds and apricot kernels. It is therefore appropriate to set a maximum level of ochratoxin A in spices and liqorice.

    • Pesticides form a broad group of chemical compounds commonly used in agriculture practice for plant protection. Application of pesticides in agricultural production brings about the risk that their residues will appear in the food chain and pose a threat to consumer health. Maximum residue levels of pesticides in food products are set by the European Commission. This paper briefly presents issue of pesticides as food chemical contaminants, taking into consideration analytical aspects of pesticide residues determination in food. Some results of recent research on determination of pesticide residues in selected agricultural/food products are also presented.

    • The paper presents instant sugar-free dessert dry mixes (jellies, starch desserts and puddings) characteristics. The criteria of choosing intensive sweeteners and bulking agents to obtain sensory and technological quality, comparable to traditional desserts with sugar, are described. The offer of instant sugar-free products may extend convenience food market in Poland.

  • 32 Tea – Aromatic Beverage or Super Antioxidant? – Anna Gramza-Michałowska
    • Tea (Camelia sinensis) is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. Types of tea, chemical composition and factors influencing content of selected substances are presented in the paper. Tea leave infusions are also important sources of substances possessing high antioxidant and antiradical potential, essential for the consumer’s health and food producers. According to the wide spectrum of action, also new directions of tea leaves extracts use in lipid containing systems are presented.

  • 37  SWDO (PSSS). Why, for whom and how? – Andrzej Hejduk, Anna Kosmacz-Chodorowska
    • Packaging Selection Support System (PSSS)/Packaging Selection Platform (PSP) was prepared by Polish Packaging Research and Development Center (COBRO) in the framework of Project PL 0015: „Packaging as a stimulus for economic growth of the region and improvement of the environment protection on the regional scale”, in cooperation with Project partners: Østfoldforskning (Norway) and Institute of Logistics and Warehousing – GS1 Poland. System is addressed to Polish whole-sale suppliers of packed fresh fruit and vegetables and their business partners, i.e.: wholesale receivers, packaging producers/suppliers and LTS service providers. System recommends, which packaging is the best for certain fruit and vegetables, according to the requirements of the receivers. Preparing and introducing properly packed produce, in the form of palletized unit loads, agreed with supply chain participants, positively influence cooperation between them and the turnover of goods.
