  • 2 Economic and Financial Results of Food Industry – Jadwiga Drożdż
    • Since several years the economic and financial situation of food industry has remained good and its financial liquidity – safe. Net profitability of the sector has been high and the return on equity has been encouraging to investments in production of food, beverages and tobacco. However, the diversity of economic and financial condition within the separate sectors of food industry remains high. In spite of it’s low financial liquidity, the most profitable branch was the production of condiments. Good results and safe financial state have been recorded in secondary processing and in processing of vegetable products. The lowest profitability indexes have been recorded in animal products’ processing. Moreover, the financial liquidity of that branch has been also low.

  • 8 Current and Expected Tendencies in the Fruit Processing Sector – Bożena Nosecka
    • Due to expected increase of consumers’ real incomes and high demand on foreign markets in the nearest future, there will be higher consumption of fruit preserves in Poland. There will also be an upward tendency in export of most of these products. The necessary condition for positive tendencies in the fruit processing sector and for strengthening of the position of Poland as the most important producer and supplier of primary processed fruits, is improvement of raw material base organization (vertical integration of factories and producers). The organizing of raw material base will be slower in 2007/08 because of a deep fall in this year harvest.

    • The aim of this study was to present the selected aspects of development of market of juices and other non-alcoholic beverage. The size and value of sale, market segmentation were presented on the basis of the market shares of main producers. The special attention was given to producers’ strategies, brand positioning as well as products’ innovations.

  • 16 Sweeteners. Part II. Health Safety – Bożena Waszkiewicz-Robak, Katarzyna Świąder, Franciszek Świderski
    • The advantages and possible threats connected with the use of sweeteners are described. Data concerning the safety of their use and regulations concerning their admission in the European Union countries is presented. Because of the objections towards artificial sweeteners known so far, regular scientific research is carried out to evaluate health safety after their intake and emend the conditions of their use. The research results are conductive to the growth tendency of the range of food products in which intensive sweeteners are used. Moreover, the increase in consumer awareness regarding the harmfulness of sugar intake and the necessity of its elimination from the diet has been observed.

    • This paper treats selected issues concerning functional foods and the examples of various bioactive substances influencing human health are presented. The functional food market and trends of new developments are described. Factors influencing functional foods production and nutritional risk for consumers are presented.

    • Food fortification is long-term way to effective prevention of development of diseases related to poor nutrition in a population. Market research of enriched products and behaviors of consumers on that market taking into accounts such aspects as familiarity and frequency of consumption of products with vitamins and minerals is presented. Knowledge of market of fortified food in examined group of consumers was good as opposed to quite low frequency of consumption of those products. The attention has been paid to the necessity of introduction of consumer’s education as a part of advertising, which could contribute to increased consumption of fortified products.

    • Worker, who moves between various environments, can be reservoir of pollution. Proper hygiene prevents dirt propagation and promotes assurance food safety. In many food processes personal hygiene is critical control point. In this article safety hazards, control measures, monitoring and corrective actions for this CCP are presented.

  • 49 Dietary Supplements Considered in New Regulation on Food and Nutrition Safety – Iwona Wrześniewska-Wal
    • Dietary supplements help consumers to eat better and healthier. Unfortunately it’s a common practice that as a dietary supplement the consumer gets OTC product. Regulation about food and nutrition safety introduces new solutions in this area. It changes the definition of dietary supplement and gives the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products the authority to assess whether the supplement is not a medicine. The manufacturer will have to obtain such opinion if the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate requires it.
