    • World financial crisis has an influence on the economy of all greatest countries. The confidence in banking system has been decreased and a dramatic slowing down of economic development, including recession in the most advanced countries, has occurred. The consequences of financial crisis are also reflected in Polish economy, including also food producers. The slowing down of the economic development of the country and of development of food industry production has been observed. The results of foreign trade of food have deteriorated. The slowing down of the country’s development will maintain the discussed tendencies.

  • 6 International Agricultural Commodity Markets- When Will They Come Back to Equilibrium? – Janusz Rowiński
    • In the last few decades world agricultural commodity markets were stable but prices in international trade of agricultural products were frequently so low that they covered only the production costs of most effective exporters. The trend of relative decrease of international agricultural prices in comparison with the international prices of non-agricultural products was also visible. This situation changed in 2007 with a very high increase of agricultural prices that cannot be fully explained by production situation and level of cereal stocks. After 2008 harvest the prices went down and now it is obvious that the situation in 2007 was temporary. According to OECD-FAO long term projections in the next ten years the price level of agricultural commodities will be higher than in the first years of the present decade but substantially lower than in the years 2007-2008.

  • 12 Foreign Trade of Polish Agri-food Products in 2008 – Wiesław Łopaciuk
    • Agri-food trade in Poland accounts for a relatively high proportion of overall trade and contributes to the reduction of negative trade balance. In the conditions of relatively stable domestic demand exports gathered most of the production increase in the recent years. Therefore it was an efficient way to get rid of the market surpluses. After 4 years of the EU membership the development considerably slowed down but still was relatively high. Recently the dynamics of agri-food exports has declined while acceleration has been observed on the import side. According to preliminary estimates in 2008 the value of agri-food exports totalled Euro 10.6 mld which was 7.2% up on 2007. At the same time the value of imports increased by 13.3% to euro 9 mld.

    • Companies of the agri-food processing sector, especially large enterprises, will finally have a chance for co-financing of planned investments from the European Union structural funds. Obtaining support will enable to implement new projects and to increase competitiveness of the companies. One of the available programs is Operational Programme Innovative Economy. This program focuses on working out and implementation of innovative solutions and new products. Several actions supporting various types of investments are anticipated in the frames of the program. Depending on a type of a planned investment, entrepreneurs can choose activities which are the most suitable and the most beneficial for them. Submitted applications compete for grants available within limited pool of resources, and the number of points obtained is decisive for receiving co-financing.

Labelling information is the factor of consumer decisions connected with nutritional behaviour. System of nutrition and health declaration is regulated by food law to protect consumers against illegal marketing practices. These declarations are necessary for pro-health oriented consumers. Modern system of food labelling is obliged to implement educational function which enables rational nutrition behaviour of consumers.
